Stumped by Tree Troubles? We're Here for You! - Get Your FREE Estimates!
A stump in the middle of the lawn has a way of staying put. You mow around it, trip on it at night and watch weeds take over the base. Stump grinding in Harahan gets rid of the part you can see and takes it down below the soil line, so the spot can go back to grass, a flower bed or a new tree.
Big Easy Tree Removal grinds stumps across Harahan, from side streets off Jefferson Hwy to Colonial Club Dr. This page covers grinding alone. For removals, trimming and our other work in town, see our tree service in Harahan page.
A stump grinder has a spinning cutter wheel fitted with teeth. The operator sweeps it back and forth across the stump, and the wood turns into chips a little at a time until the top of the stump sits below grade. The root system stays in the ground and slowly breaks down on its own. If you need the whole stump and root ball pulled out instead, that’s a separate job, covered on our stump removal page.
Grinding can be the gentler choice for a finished yard. It leaves a patch of chips where the stump was, without the large hole that pulling out a root ball can leave.
A stump you may be looking at is Chinese tallow. LSU AgCenter describes the tree as “a common sight in neighborhood yards throughout Louisiana” and notes that it “outcompetes native shrubs and trees.” If you’ve cut a tallow out of a fence line or a back corner, the stump may be sitting right against the boards.
If an old oak or pecan came down on your lot a while back, its stump may be wider than it looks, with a root flare that spreads past the cut.
Stumps also pile up after hurricanes. When our fulfillment partner Gulf Coast Tree Service handles a crane or storm removal, the stump may be left for later so the yard can be cleared first. It can be ground whenever you’re ready.
If your stump sits behind a fence, a little homework helps. Before the job, measure the narrowest opening between the street and the stump, whether that’s a side gate, a gap between the house and the fence, or a path beside the driveway. Tell us that number and whether there are steps, a pool deck or soft ground on the way. We’ll confirm it during the walk-through and plan the route in the written estimate.
A grinder cuts into the soil, and you may not know exactly where a gas, water or cable line runs. Louisiana 811 handles locate requests under the state dig law. Stump grinding isn’t named in the law’s definition of excavation, but because the wheel works below the soil line, putting in a locate request before grinding is a sensible step. Private lines you installed yourself, like a sprinkler feed or a line to a shed, may not be marked, so point those out at the walk-through.
Grinding leaves a mound of chips around the old stump. You can rake them back into the hole, spread them as mulch, or have them hauled. If you plan to lay sod or seed, pull most of the chips out and fill with topsoil, since grass struggles in straight wood chips.
Surface roots are the other thing to decide on. A big oak stump can have roots running across the lawn well away from the trunk. If those are a mowing or tripping problem, mention them at the walk-through so the estimate includes grinding them down near the surface.
Thinking about planting in the same spot? Setting the new tree a little to one side of the old stump makes digging easier. LSU AgCenter lists live oak, bald cypress and southern magnolia among the most wind-resistant trees and gives crape myrtle good marks for wind resistance among small trees. Our tree planting page has more on choosing a replacement.
Harahan is an incorporated city with its own departments. The Harahan code sections we reviewed don’t address stumps or yard trees, so if the stump sits near the street or you’re unsure which side of the property line it’s on, check with the city’s Regulatory Department on Jefferson Hwy before grinding.
If the tree is still standing, start with tree removal in Harahan. If you’re not sure the tree needs to go at all, our arborist services in Harahan page explains a health check. Neighbors can see stump grinding in River Ridge and stump grinding in Kenner, and our main stump grinding services page covers the work across New Orleans.
Often, yes. A grinder can usually work close to a fence line, and how close depends on where the posts and boards sit. If the stump has grown into or under the fence, we’ll look at it during the walk-through and put the plan in the written estimate before anything is ground, so you know what the fence side will look like afterward.
Grinding removes the stump down below the soil line, and the roots left in the ground usually break down over time. Some species can push up sprouts from leftover roots for a while. If you see shoots coming up around the old stump, cutting them back as they appear can wear them out over time.
Chips spray out low around the stump, and some may land in nearby beds. When the grinding is done, the chips are raked into a pile or back into the hole, and the lawn around the spot is cleaned up. You decide whether the chips stay as mulch or get hauled.
It can. A stump left after a storm removal can usually sit for a while, though it may be a tripping hazard. You can wait until roofs and fences are repaired, then have the stump ground once the yard is clear and equipment can get through.
