Question 1

Do I need a permit to remove a tree from my yard in Covington?

Accepted Answer

Often, yes. Covington's code requires a tree-cutting permit before removing any tree larger than six inches in diameter at chest height in residential zoning districts, and live oaks carry extra protection. The building permit office handles it. Property outside city limits falls under St. Tammany Parish rules instead, so check which one applies to your address.

Question 2

Can you take down a pine that leans toward my house without damaging the roof?

Accepted Answer

Often, yes. A pine that close to a structure is usually taken apart from the top down. Each section is cut and lowered on a rope in a controlled way, which keeps weight off the roof and gutters. If the tree is too large or too damaged to climb safely, the job may call for a crane, which our fulfillment partner provides.

Question 3

My pine has small holes and sawdust on the bark. Does it have to come out?

Accepted Answer

Not always, but it needs a look soon. LSU AgCenter notes that stressed and storm-damaged pines attract bark beetles such as Ips engravers and southern pine beetles. An infested pine can decline quickly and may affect nearby pines. An inspection can tell you whether the tree can be kept or should come down before it becomes brittle.

Question 4

Who handles trees touching power lines in Covington?

Accepted Answer

The utility. Covington's code says limbs near high-voltage lines are kept clear by the appropriate utility company. Call the electric provider listed on your bill before anyone works near the line. Once the line is safe, we can handle the rest of the tree.
